Two reasons:
1) Blacksburg, VA is a lot closer to Washington, DC than New Orleans, LA.
2) THe workin in New Orleans would have been greatly hindred by AIr FOrce One and a Presidential Entourage.

It is a bit of a sticky wicket. The US president Should Be Invited By the Govenor. It was requested within hours of VA and sort of sat shelved in LA/ NO Questions about safety are always a premier factor which most presidents do not over ride when the demand is made.

Others before me have already mentioned the flooding, the weather, flying south would have been flying into the remnants of the hurricane, etc. All good points.
But here's another one: Lets even -- for the sake of argument, and counter to the above paragraph-- accept your premise that he was wrong in not going Louisiana and Mississippi immediately after Katrina.
How about he learned his lesson and applied it? How's that? Satisfied now? Would you rather that having not gone to Katrina he be an equal opportunity @sshole who didn't go to Va?

because the event at VTech was a unknown event. Every person with a functioning brain knew that the hurricane was coming. The so called mayor was in charge of getting the city evacuated yet he failed. School buses sat under water instead of being utilized to remove the people. Why was that? Who was in charge? Oh that's right some ignorant jack@ss that failed the citizens. Yet they were dumb enough to let them lead them again. Infinite wisdom at its finest

He screwed up! Just like the last 4 years and counting. Bush was elected because there wasn't a better choice to bring him out.
Exactly "what would he have done?" Nothing as usual. Only poor people. Let them struggle. He is the president and had the power and the responsibility to be there. There were cameracrews and such down there and you mean to tell me he couldn't be bothered for 5 days?!!!! You people are nuts!

After Katrina, resources and infrastructure (what was left) were overwhelmed with urgent rescue and relief operations. A presidential visit at that time would have interfered with these vital functions.

Virginia Tech is accessible after the shooting incident while the area devastated by Katrina could not be reached due to widespread flooding.

Gee, do you think it could have something to do with not being able to get there? You do remember that it flooded? More to the point, you do remember that there was a major hurricane in that area, right?

Oh please........get off it already. Katrina was over 2 years ago. He did what he could then, and he did go visit when it was deemed accessible.
