Streamlining refers to creating a shape that fluids can easily pass over and around. The curves that are instantaneously tangent to the path of fluid flow are called "streamlines." This technique is important in the design of cars, because it reduces drag as the vehicle moves through the air.

Streamlining is shaping something in such a way that a fluid like air or water will flow over its surface with less drag force. Drag is undesirable since it slows down the forward motion of the object. Smooth teardrop shapes etc. are very good at allowing air or water to flow around the object with a minimum loss of energy.

Today's cars have a sleek look compared to the blockier shapes of cars of the 1970's because of this process.
