Scientists today announced the discovery a possible life-bearing planet in orbit around a red dwarf, Gliese 581, which is 20.5 LY (about 120 trillion miles) from Earth. If there are Red Dwarf planets...will there be another version of Arnold Rimmer living on one of the, failing his Space Corps Academy exams even as we speak?

I too, have heard of this planet on the local news and sought to find out about it. The planet's name so far is 581 "c" because of its high life bearing possibility, does in fact orbit a small red dwarf named Gliese 581. Gravity due to its increased density would be much greater than on our Earth (1.6x). It appears to only have a 13 day year and is also 14x closer to it's parent star than we are to the sun although the temperatures would range from low 30s to 105 degrees. Water in all 3 states are highly possible temperature wise, but we do not know as of this moment if it is indeed on the planet. I hope this bit of info helped you in your search for knowledge. If you have any other questions you can e-mail me and I'll gladly answer them to the best of my knowledge.

Like Gene said the scientists have said that the planet may have water because of mild temperature and the proper distance from the red dwarf.

According to my opinion that planet will not have any type of itelligent aliens as the star is younger than ours.

It is not pronounced as possible life bearing. It only has temperatures in the life bearing range like mars. It might be loaded with sulphuric acid. the press shoots from the hip too much. And it was announced two days ago.

I guess we would all like to know for sure that aliens exist.
I don't think a red dwarf is the place to look.
Our best bet is SETI,one day they may receive a transmission the will tell us we are not alone.
