D. As the cell gets larger, the surface area to volume ratio is reduced. This is a problem because the surface area is the amount of plasma membrane. There has to be a large enough plasma membrane to handle all the exchanges of gases, nutrients, wastes, and other molecules for the cell. That becomes more and more difficult as the cell gets larger.
