Regina it stands for the Queen.
In all UK court cases it is the crown ie the queen who is prosecuting.

It means Regina V blah. in other words Her majesty the queen V Blah. It is the queens council V blah. All Judges in high Court are acting as a representative of the Queen.The queen signs all documents as Elizabeth R. The letter R is for Regina.

Here in the U.S., a criminal case is usually People v. Blah, which is short for People of the State of ______ v. Blah.

But when referring to the case, it is said as The Crown and 'Blah' rather than Regina, as my university lecture repeadtedly keeps reminding us all.

It depends how old the case is. Between 1901 and early 1952 it stood for "Rex" -- the Latin word for king. Since then it has stood for "Regina" -- the Latin word for queen. That is why, on the whole, it is a safer bet to say "the Crown".
