It sure does help, no one can respect a doormat. There is such a thing as being assertive without being aggressive.

Very much - However assertiveness is a learnt skill - so go and learn it.
Lack of assertiveness can lead to all sorts of problems
By the way assertiveness is not being a bully or aggressive- it is to do with your rights as a human in any situation. It is about what and how to negotiate.

I think assertiveness does help in many situations. Not aggressiveness, but assertiveness. Asserting yourself in work and personal situations helps to keep your confidence up, keeps you motivated and believe it or not helps to releive some stress rather than holding it in. Being assertive shows who you are, where you stand and offers your suggestions and ideas to others.

I agree that you need to be yourself. One way of not concentrating on being assertive is that whenever you find something that needs your input take time out to find yourself a very clear vision of a well formed outcome for whatever it is.
This outcome must be expressed in the positive i.e. what you want and not what you do not. Then get clarity on surrounding issues such as can you control it and how, and is it worth it.
Once you have this your input is powerful because it is thought through and clear

Quite the opposite.
If you are not by nature an assertive person but are trying to be assertive then you are constantly trying to be something you are not. You fail miserably and get stressed. I see this in business all the time. better to be yourself.

To some point yes. There is a fine balance, you need compassion, assertiveness, and fairness. If you have that all with common sense and a little brains, you will get far!

Yes. Good point by ascoile though, mustn't force it if it's not in your nature. You can learn to curve your thinking so you worry less about being assertive if you personally struggle with it.

Yes, in many ways.
It will help you get the things you want and it will stop people walking all over you while they are in the process of getting the things they want.

I think it's good if it's been hitherto deficient.
I think it can be used as an excuse to be an asshole, though, sometimes.
A middle path's probably best, where everyone wins; not least yourself. :-)
