Genetic diversity is mostly from:
1. Independent assortment. The way one pair of chromosomes separates into the gametes does not affect how another pair of chromosomes separates. So there are many, many possible combinations of chromosomes in a gamete.
2. Crossing over. During prophase I the homologous chromosomes synapse into a tetrad (they pair up gene-for-gene) and the neighboring chromatids exchange segments before the homologs separate from each other.
