I agree! It's no big deal. You should be celebrating another year of life you have been blessed with, not celebrating materialism.

I agree with your opinion but one can not force strict moral code in the personal matters in society.
Look at this from another angle: The cycle of economy moves due to any money circulated by spending by those have it- be it on lavish birthday or religious festival or any celebration rather than other useful productive activity on which you say it should be spent. No one can deny this.
But when some one buys and some body sells- this produces jobs and money gets distributed. So although it may seem wasteful expenditure, the money trickles down to workers who provide goods and service to us.
Look at globalization- all back office jobs are moving to India and other countries and money is flowing where services are being provided at better rate than the out-sourcing country. There are noises being made in western contries about it but this shift in jobs is governed by laws of economics and not by emotional quotient of the issues involved.
This has been going on since ages and this is the way it is going to be whether we like or not.

No one HAS to spend huge amounts on someone for their birthday, the gift or even saying Happy Birthday is nice enough. In a world that is so full of stress and hate and all that bullcrap, it's nice to have a day that is all about you and bring close the family and friends, that on normal days may be too busy to find their way to you.

I agree, but it seems to be a personal family thing that is passed on through the generations..
Maybe you could start a new meaning with your family for future birthdays.
