You need to check 3 things.

1. Bolt pattern. The E36 takes 5 bolts. Since you said the MR2 has 5 studs, check if the 5-position matches the E36.

2. Wheel offset. This has to be the same (or at least within range), if not, you could be looking at premature bearing wear.

3. Hub size. The wheel cannot be just supported by the studs alone, it has to be supported by the hub. The studs keep the wheel secured, but it's the hub that should take the load of the wheel.

This has to be exact match (ie; wheel does not feel loose when it is placed on the E36 hub before putting on the lug bolts). If there is play (the wheel has a larger hub size than the car), you can look into getting some aftermarket hub rings to fit into the wheel before installation.

The easiest way to check is to look at the specs of some aftermarket wheels online for both cars. If they match in all 3 of the above specs, you're good to go.

**While it might seem logical to think that vehicle weight might be an issue, it's really not, unless you're trying to use say, a Toyota Prius wheel on a hummer or something silly like that. Wheels are made to withstand considerable weight ranges.

RE:
Will Toyota MR2 (5 Stud) Wheels fit on a BMW E36?

Ii would say probably not a good idea the MR2 is a lighter car (2400 lbs) and the rims may not be designed for that much weight (3100 lbs)as for the E36 it has a 5-120 bolt pattern Ive only seen 4-100 bolt patterns for the MR2. even if there is a 5-120 bolt pattern MR2 rim i would check to see if it can carry the weight of the E36.
