We went from Skiathos to Athens was quite along trip ...stayed a couple of nights in Athens ...was not that impressed with Skiathos although met loads of people who loved it and went there each year ......Was not that expensive the Athens trip ....

Aegina is a nice island near Athens (1 hour by ferry, there are ferries every hour). However, it is not the best island to stay for holidays, although it is great to visit for a day trip. It is quite small and the beaches are not so great. The same applies for Hydra.
Basically, you don't visit Athens while staying on the islands. You fly to Athens, stay for a couple of days to see Athens, and then you take the ferry from Athems to the islands. Some nice and lively islands closeby (2-3 hours by fast ferry) include Andros, Syros, Mykonos, Paros .

To be very exact, the nearest island is Salamina - 10 minutes by ferry, somewhere near Piraeus. But do not go there, it is not worth it. Two other are Moni and Agistri (both near Aegina, already mentioned by others), but I doubt they are lively. Kea and Kythnos are also 2 other options in proximity.
In my opinion the nearest lively islands (which tend to be very crowded during weekends) are Hydra and Spetses. Have a look at what they offer and decide.

Hi,
I 'm greek and used to live in Athens.It depends on what you want.If what you want is bursting nightlife go to Mykonos. If you just want a picturesque island go to Hydra or Santorini.
Santorini is not that close to Athens but is by far my absolute favourite.
