Probably the same reason that kids sing 'Ring A Ring A Rosie' as that is about the Black Death and when the part with 'A Tissue A Tissue We All Fall Down' is said that was to signify all the people dropping dead. I guess it is just tradition.
Many of the children's nursery rhymes and songs are not exactly politically correct or what you would do with your child. Think of the rhyme As I was going to ST Ives I met a man with seven wives. Imagine that having seven wives. That's illegal in most countries. And think of them keeping those cats and kits in sacks. The R.S.P.C.A would be on to them straight away for cruelty to animals. And what about the old woman in the shoe who whipped her kids soundly and put them to bed.

I believe, the songs origin was actual a sea shanty.

The crows nest of sailing vessels being referred to also as cradles, and subsequently the lookouts as "babes" or the "Baby" in the nest or cradle.

Still messed up as a lullaby, thats why I always stuck to Gordon Lightfoot's "The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", its still about a shipwreck, but somewhat educational and long enough for my kids to bore themselves to sleep.

As a lesson! If you are a bad baby, I will put you in a tree! Man, it's a creepy song. I've always thought so.

I know...who wrote that song? I remember an episode of the Simpson's when they were singing it to Maggie and she was imagining it in her head. "Down will come baby, cradle and all" lol

Not at all it's in the tone of the voice. I mean you can say the harshest things to it, but if it is in a nice tone it won't mind

I don't know, but I agree with you. That song always seemed like a bit of a veiled threat to me...
