Did I use the word "But" correctly in this sentence?

'Material possesion is but an expression of vanity'

The meaning I'm trying to get across is - Material possesion= expression of vanity

I always come across "But" used this way and I'm not sure if it's correct.

thanks!

Yes. It's like using 'just' or 'merely' in that sentence.
