You can get your motherboard replaced, but if you shop around you may find a place that will try and repair the motherboard.
Many people might consider this impossible, but the big companies don't bother with the repairs, it is easier for them to replace it than fix it.
But in one place we had some dell laptops that we were able to fix by taking them to a place the specialised in these repairs (mind you, this was in Sydney Australia, so you will need to find a local place). However the repairs didn't last that long.
If you can find the same model laptop that is broken, they might be able to put the 2 together into one working laptop. (We did this with 2 laptops, one with a broken screen, one with a broken motherboard).

In all honesty, when someone says replace the Motherboard with a laptop, it is like replacing the screen (may as well get a new laptop).
Apart from the fact you have to get specialised people to perform the replacement, you have to ensure it is exact to the one you have or XP will have sever problems with the new drivers. In some cases wont even boot.
Try to get a second opinion! make sure it is the motherboard that is failing before doing anything rash. There are lots of corner repair shops that will look at it for you, and it doesnt usually cost more than £10 to diagnose.
That said, Im sure you can get the motherboard repaired. follow the source link given.

Depends on who told you that and what you consider expensive. Generally speaking, if indeed your laptops motherboard needs repair, its less costly, and easier, to replace the entire laptop.....the hard drive can be salvaged and somtimes the memory as well, but as far as replacing or repairing the motherboard on a laptop, it is a long and expensive process that usually does not produce the results you are looking for. Laptops generally fail from the battery or hard drive before the motherboard.....its also possible the processor has failed.....if you have the time, and resources, start with figuring out what and when the problem occurs, if its bootup, or after using it for awhile.....is it having problems only with certain applications.....is it "losing" information.....and is it happening everytime you reboot or gradually.
30 percent of laptop problems are related to the battery either overheating, or not charging anymore.....10 percent are related to the hard drive either failing, overheating, or being damaged....20 percent of problems can be traced to the memory failing.....35 percent of laptop problems are caused by overheating....3 percent due to processor problems....and the remaining 2 percent are "other"
so the likelihood its your motherboard is pretty minimal.

yes and yes. ask for an estimated price first. The motherboard replacement can exceed the cost of lower priced laptops due tot he labor costs added to the part cost. If however you have an expensive laptop still price it out. Shops tend to run 40 to 80 dollars per hour labor.
