It depends on where your from in the us. Most of the south calls all soda Coke, while the north east calls all soda Soda, then i think the midwest calls all soda POP. Its just different dialects. Like how there are more MP3 players then the iPOD but most call all mp3 players iPODs.

In my neck of the woods, we call soda, "tonic."
However in the land of the bean and the cod, we also call a Coke a Coke if it's the brand name version.
Your question reminds me of the old SNL skit, "No Coke, Pepsi," with the two Greek guys.

I stay in PA, and have been talk over with it as soda in particular. yet while i'm at a cafe I ask for which one i choose by utilising call. i don't basically say, "i'd like a soda". I used to paintings with a guy from Michigan who known because it pop. yet another guy there used to bust on him asserting "Pop's the guy who did your mom." not the classiest reaction, yet style of humorous.
