Autism is not the same in everyone. Severly autistic people are unable to even look after themselves. Mild autistics have good coping skills.
So, obviously the ability to understand their condition is dependent on the level of autism. Most people with intellectual disabilities understand their limitations, but when supported by family, schools and community, they are like the rest of us, they are trying to achieve their potential, rather than live to perceived limitations.
Note: Intellectual disabilities cover a wide range of problems, and the great crime of the era of institutes was to lock up everyone, even those who could have a productive life in society. I think the great crime of today's attitude is to throw the heavily intellectually disabled out into the community without adequate support, where they suffer.
When they are treated as individuals and support is related to their individual needs, they are the happiest and most productive.
