I often do this during my creativity classes.
The best way is to think about what is success. How would you measure your success. Most unhappy people are those that seek what others tell them to seek, eg money, fame, sex.
For example, do you define success as happiness (common in western society), safety (problem common in Iraq these days), a good and prosperous family (common in Asia) and so on.
Then, work out some things to achieve these. Many chinese parents work long hours, have little and give everything to support their children's future....and guess what, they feel happy. But this is their idea of success.
Many people have good jobs, good careers, respect, money, house, nice car...but are unhappy.
Once you know what you want, then it is just matter of working for it. Happiness is hard work. It takes time, and often there are times of sadness and disappointment. But when you have a goal, it is easier to keep going.
For myself my goals, happiness, being respected and hopefully making the world a little bit better by my presence.
I have nothing to prove to others. I don't need money or power (though I like those things too). When things are bad, or hate my job, if I am helping others then I am achieving my goals. In the end, I feel satisfied.

Figure out what you love to do. Develop the habit of manking the most of important situations. This includes finding a positive outcome for some of the worst circumstances. Most of all, do not give up on yourself. At the very worst, start over. As the song says "when you're down and out, the only way is *up*."
In general, the most successful people are the ones who figure out what they want, develop a course of action to achieve those ends, and commit to the plan of action. If you do what you love for a living, you add five days of vacation to every week.
How do you figure out what that might be? If you're in high school, try taking an interest survey at your guidance office. This helps match your general likes and dislikes with various professions -- including salary, interacting with people, solving problems, making your own decisions, and so on.
If you're not sure, try taking a few classes at your local community college -- they're relatively inexpensive (espeically if you audit instead of taking them for credit), and they give you some idea of what's involved in that field. Try different things -- stretch yourself a bit.
Most of all, keep learning -- the more you learn about yourself and the world around you, the more tools you have for solving various problems ... beginning with your own life.
