here I go again with this wretched Car!
In my 92' chevy Skylark,I was charged $330.00 ( inc. labor) to have the waterpump replaced, along with the Thermostat and gasket. The cost of the water pump was $70.00. Does $330.00 sound rite ? I don't know how long it took him, because I left it there over the weekend. He did a couple of other things like put a sealer in the tank because it has a couple of small leaks.
I asked him to drive it off a Cliff for me, but he didn't! ( lol!!!)

Ms G—
The price isn't too far off.
If the shop rate is around $100.00 per hour, you can see that if it took him two hours, and added coolant and sealer, along with the thermostat and gasket, he hasn't unreasonably hurt you.
The shop rate may seem excessive, but consider—
1) Wages
2) Insurance
3) Office help
4) Utilities (Phone, electricity, etc)
5) Equipment
6) State and Federal liabilities
7) Licenses
8) Etc.
9) Etc.

You see my point. The sad part is that the cars that most need the work are owned by those who can least afford it.
If I had to pay someone else to repair my cars, my wife and I would have to walk. I can't afford my own labor rate. So mine get repaired after hours and on week-ends.

it somewhat is a huge question! it somewhat is complicated to respond to in spite of the incontrovertible fact that on the grounds that there could be maximum of variables. I actual have been an plane mechanic for over 11 years now. I actual have shrunk foreign places (Iraq) and revamped $a hundred seventy five,000 a year working 40 hours a week. I actual have acquaintances that robotically take contracting jobs foreign places and make 6 figures. are you able to are making that money in the states? not very actual. intense paying plane mechanic jobs are protection tension government contractors, mechanics for plane assigned to woodland hearth contracts and of course the airlines, regardless of the reality that the airlines have been under financial tension for some time. Mechanics at an FBO will make under an automobile mechanic a lot greater probably. FBO jobs are reliable for gaining journey in spite of the incontrovertible fact that. I at present artwork as a EMS helicopter mechanic. particular it somewhat is achieveable an vehicle mechanic makes greater desirable than me, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, pay is barely component to the equation. I basically artwork often 3-4 days a week. i'm gross sales. i comprehend automobile mechanics that make $eighty,000 yet they quite stay at artwork. i individually might particularly make much less money and spend time with my infants. the different component to the equation isn't any remember if or not you get excitement from aviation. in case you think of airplanes and helicopters are cool and you have a protection oriented approach, aviation could be an rather priceless profession and you may make super money at it. plane mechanics are component to a small group of persons who get excitement from doing what they love. confident, pilots get all the dignity, yet all of us comprehend that this is as a results of fact of experienced mechanics that they are waiting to defy gravity and return to earth properly.

According to labor guide it gives 1.7 hrs for water pump and .5 for the thermostat..that makes 2.2 labor hours..according his labor rates and he might have added another hour or so due to smaller leaks not showing up until the water pump was replaced..---just for you peace of mind..sealers added to coolant system, cause problems-they stop up the heater core and cause blockages in the radiator..I would find out just what he kind of sealer he added.. and did he ask your permission..If not, find out why........look at your repair invoice..what did he charge in labor..then find out his labor rate..but as a rule...always get a itemized repair invoice and always tell them, don't do anything without asking you first..Im me if you want to on yahoo...gotspeed7883...

yes $330 does unfortunatly sound right. you have to remember that most shops go my book time which is found using simple hand tools (not even ratchets). if they get the job done quickly they make more money if they are slow they lose money. also they have many other costs like tools, insurence, the shop its self, ... most repairs are easy enough you can do them your self if you have a bit of patience. the tools are cheap enough and any good auto parts store will help you through it. if you have more questions contact me at hunter1stshot@yahoo.com and i will be glad to help.

if they dont get you on the labor, they get you on the parts. best thing you can do if your going go to the shop is research the price of the parts,(assuming you know what they are) and most of all, just calling around and getting at least 3 separate estimates.
