well they are transparent and its hard to see them when they are.
Also you can gram stain them to see if the they are gram positive or negative.
You see shape better (and if they are in pairs, chains etc) and if they have flagella or even gel caps.

that is the purpose of staining.unstained bacteria is transparents. when you stain the bacteria, you will discover lots of things depending on the stain which you use. you can characterize the stained bacteria. Unstained bacteria may never show any dinstintive differences because you will observe the same bacteria and unable to intepret anything from what you observed.that is why unstained bacteria is more difficult to observed than the stained bacteria.

Normally they are too thin to see any detail, since they have no need for colour, there is no contrast. Staining allows for better viewing against an unstained background, or, if possible, different parts can pick up different colour stain, so you can see it even better.
