Some retarded guy befriends a girl because they both like dolls and make believe.

The parents are against the young girl being around him, because he is mental, plays with a lot of dolls, plus plays with kids.
The parents end up making a mistake about the guy and insist the girl stop being with the guy.
Well, the girl returns a doll he gave to her at the end of the movie because the parents insist she give it back.
They find they guy in a fridgerator clutching the doll.
The girl ends up taking the doll.

The movie seems like it is almost an exact copy of the original. The one I seen was earlier. Probably early 70's.

About the original. It was just at the point where the retarded guy was about to come out of his shell that he was thrust back in.
That is why he comitted suicide.

...could this possibly be the 1998 independent, direct-to-video film, entitled "Digging to China", starring Kevin Bacon??? Despite having the film in my collection, I haven't had a chance to see it yet; but I have seen the trailer, and it seems to run parallel to your synopsis description.

I saw it too.... I've looked it up on IMDB and can't come up with anything.....I'm going bonkers over it.
