Hi David o,

If you're not getting any error messages before it shuts down or any error messages that come up in the POST (The black screen with the white writing when you turn your computer on) then it is probably over heating. The POST is a special check that runs before windows boots in to make sure that all your hardware is working correctly. This would detect stuff like bad RAM, mega hard drive failure, loads of things...

So does your computer feel quite hot when it turns itself off? Before it turns off, are you running any high powered applications (For example, converting a video). The more processor speed needed by applications, the hotter the processor gets as it is doing all the work.

Shutting down is a good thing though! I say this because if it stayed on and continued to get hotter, then your processor would fry! It is a security mechanism on your motherboard that says "HELP! Im too hot!" and it turns off without an error because it is nothing to do with Windows, it is your actual piece of hardware that is doing it. You can change the temperature that your processor shuts the computer down at by editing the temperature in the BIOS (Hold down or to get into it when your computer boots in). I seriously don't recommend raising the temperature (I *think* the shut down temperature on mine is 70 degrees). However, maybe some bright spark has got into your BIOS and lowered the temperature shut down degrees, so the computer is shutting down prematurely? Just a thought!

So, if it is over heating problems, get yourself a tray fan or something to plug underneath the laptop to keep it cooler. You can find quite a lot of things that will help you!

Another problem could be that your motherboard has packed up and died. I had this happen to me with a desktop PC recently. However, the PC was shutting down at least every 10 minutes. If this is the problem and your motherboard is old, then you may need to buy a new processor as well as a new motherboard, as processors change and you can't allways get one to fit in your motherboard's slot.

Hope this helps!

If you can get to the 'my computer' logo in the start menu-right click on it, go to properties and tools. Tick both boxes in the disc check. When you re boot this will check for errors.
Might work!
