The purpose used to be showing off exotic animals. This involved keeping the animals in small cages, subject to large crowds every day.

Nowadays, zoos are leaning more toward educating about nature. They are building more and more large habitats for the animals, where they can actually enjoy their lives, with spaces where they can hide from the public if they wish. Also, zoos are involved in breeding rare animals, like pandas, that have dwindling natural populations.

I think it could be improved when every animal has a proper habitat to live in, with enough room to explore freely.

One of the purposes is to have an environment for species of animals where they are maintained without the threat of human encroachment and poachers. Also they can be studied for future benefit to help preserve them. The Zoos of the world can be made better by having the specified enclosures simulating or replicating the natural environment and habitat of the captive species as closely as possible.
