I always recommend getting it, because it is most always cheaper than your insurance deductible. Most deductibles are $250.00 to $500.00. If you rent a car for a couple of days the per day price (depending on where you rent) is always cheaper than your deductible. If you go through your own insurance and get damage, you have to file a claim and that will cause your rates to go up and you have to pay your high deductible. In some states, you can get charged for the downtime of the vehicle and that is not covered by many insurance companies. So let's say you hit a pole on your way out of the rental lot and it takes a week to get a new bumper in. You continue to rent the vehicle until it gets fixed. That is no joke. As far as your credit card goes, it is only secondary, it will only cover liability in most cases, and they don't cover the loss of use also. I would avoid taking the insurance through Orbitz, Cheap Tickets, etc., because the way that works, is that you have to pay for the damage, and then the insurance company will reimburse you at their leisure. Lots of people think that their car insurance will cover it all, but sadly I have seen many people burned by their company when they find out they don't. Many people get the "Rental Car Reimbursement" option confused with rental car coverage. I'll leave you with this example. Let's say you rent a car for 3 days at 39.99/day, and you hit a deer. You have to file a claim through your insurance and your deductible is $500.00. The car goes in the shop for 2 weeks because of heavy front end damage that equals $559.86 for the downtime. That downtime is not covered by your insurance, so you just paid $1059.86 for hitting that deer, and if you have previous claims on your insurance, they would drop you for sure. Let's say that you took the coverage, the coverage where I work is $20.95/day, so that would equal $62.85. That 62.85 is all that you would have to pay and you would never hear from us again. So take that into consideration, everyone wants to save money at the rental counter and say that it is too expensive, compare $1059.86 to $62.85. Who's saving money now?

I don't choose any of the optional insurance coverages since my own insurance covers me in a rental car.

Any insurance you get will only kick in after your own insurance has been exhausted. Plus, most credit cards provide liability insurance automatically if you use their card to rent the car. I never get it.
