Just when I was becoming convinced that racism in the US was becoming a thing of the past, several people here are justifying denying me a vote because I live in a city that has Black majority. They also falsely assume the it is a poor city that is not paying its way but is living on welfare. The per capita income is $55,000 which is higher than any state , the highest state is CT with $48,000. D.C.'s state/local tax burden percentage is higher than in all but four states and is well above the national average. Others assume that it is a city of Illiterate people but in fact 45% of the adult population has a collage degree or higher which is more than any state, and more than double most southern states. The original justification for denying DC the vote, that government workers could dominate the government, is no longer valid because most of them live in MD and VA and already have representation in congress.

I'm not sure I like it. I would have to write more to write my brother who lives there. District of the District of Columbia is just way too long, the original District of Columbia is long enough and understood to be the capital.

This is just me, also. I think the US has enough states so keeping it an even, nice number like 50 is great. Guam, Puerto Rico might also try to be a state someday, but 50 is very convenient unless some states went together and made one state out of the two of them.......

That's a big question, honestly.

Frankly, I'd prefer they remain, as envisioned, neutral territory. But the reality is a lot of folks call D.C, "home", and they're denied representation.

That said, I'm a Conservative, and D.C. is filled, primarily, with poor black folks who will very likely vote Democrat. So, for that additional selfish reason, I also hope they don't get to elect a voting Representative (they have a non-voting Rep NOW).

NO...
It was set up as the geographical area (land space) to house the central seat of government...
As for those that think they are deprived "representation" That is false...No one forces them to live in DC they can reside in any of the other 50 states if they feel the need to have "representation". They receive all the government subsidized programs just like all the other states...some would argue that they actually receive more...
one more point...DC has the highest illiteracy rate...so how would they read a ballot or write a letter to their congressman ???

while you're asserting Bush isn't a thoroughly adverse man or woman, no difficulty. You forgot to show that he's complete some issues in the direction of engaged on the AIDS difficulty in Africa. Nixon time-honored the EPA. Hitler created the Autobahn device. Adam Sandler became in a solid action picture, as quickly as. i think of. i think of this is nonetheless a stretch to assert Bush has "completed greater to bridge partisan divides and tutor appreciate to his fighters than all people else."

I would like to see the citizens of DC have a voting representative. They pay taxes, they are citizens - they should have representation.

We fought a war a long time ago and one of the battles cries was "No taxation without representation!" Seems like a similar situation.

However, the Constitution says nothing about DC having a vote in congress, only states. If we go this way, it has to be done by constitutional amendment.

I think it's a terrible idea for the simple fact that the founding fathers wanted it to be a neutral site. Also, the population is almost all black and the Dems just want to have one more seat in congress. Also, didn't they just have something in the news that said the population there were mostly illiterate?

they'll have to get a new motto to put on all the license plates hehe

its a pretty partisan issue because DC will vote democrat b/c of the large black population. even though it'd be more fair for them to have representation, politics is not about fairness...

Gosh, I didn't know that the District needed it's own district!

Does that mean my town can get its own town now? Or my state can get its own state? Golly... can I have my own PERSON, too?

they want to have their own senator, etc. mainly a black set of congressmen and senators. founding fathers didn't want that. and so far it has been prevented. it was supposed to be a neutral zone. female black rep and jesse jackson has work for decades atochange all that hewanted to be senator for dc because no state would elect him. all will try next.
