Sleep is not a luxury. its a NEED for the organisms of all vertebrates (man included)
Our brain is like a small laboratory, and during rthe sleep pkase, lots of thimgs happen there, especially, synthesis of our own analgesics (endorphins, that is why sleepless people are more sensitive to pain), and other chemicals (growth hormone, catecholamines, that will keep us alert once we sleep well)
There are lots of chaprets and books dedicated to the topic, however, the immune system is the one that suffers the most in the long run....decreased (mild) quantity and quality of white blood cells, making us more prone to certain infections etc)
NO single death has been described from deprivation of sleep, however, lack of precision in delicate tasks, irritability, sensation of tiredness and "irreality" can be expected after 48 hours without slepping..
There is am old say that goes: ..."if your work interferes with your sleeping, please give up your work....and go to sleep"
Sweet dreams pal....You need it

Lack of sleep won't kill you but it can and will affect everything you do. You gotta give your brain a rest from the books once in a while even if it is just to go outside for five minutes and take a few deep breaths of fresh air. If you are still not able to sleep even after you are done with your tests or whatever you are studying for then try this link:
http://www.jigsawhealth.com/articles/insomnia-symptoms.html
It lists a few tests you can try to see if you may have insomnia. My best advice is to just step away from the books for a while, too much studying can be overkill for the brain.
Good luck

Eventually, you will die. (I think the record of going without sleep is 11 days, then a person dies, but not sure)
I know how you feel with the homework. I barely ever sleep anymore either! Just take it easily on the hw. Health is more important than homework; and you can always do the homework on the way to class or on the bus/in a car or while eating. Just sleep! Good luck! =)

You need to let yourself get some sleep. You won't be able to pass the tests you are studying for if you are this worn it. You need to try to get at least 5 hours of sleep a night, and that's the minimum. Not sleeping for more than 24 hours is dangerous.
You definitely don't think clearly, your balance and judgement virtually disappear, and you can't drive at all. It's almost worse than being drunk

There is a such thing as studying too hard. I am kinda in the same boat. When it gets to the point as to where I need to sleep... I will stop studying and wake up early befoe class and cram and it works wonders. Funny how I get better grades when I end up cramming for tests. This doesnt work for everyone though... try it once you will be better rested and you brain will function better and have better memory. when your too tired you or your brain wont be worth squat.

I don't know all the symptoms but after a while you will start to hallusinate. I think it can even lead to death in certain extreme cases. Sleep is important.

Any-one who goes with-out sleep for a long time will eventually die. One can go without food and water for a longer time and survive, but will die if deprived of sleep for a shorter lapse of time.

That pretty much happens. I used to be like that, too, but you GOTTA get some sleep so your brain can restore its energy.
