Of course they should. And descendants of slaves should receive restitution. Americans love to talk about the Holocaust because it didn't happen here and they can't blame themselves. But Americans are responsible for 2 bigger holocausts and they should not forget it.

Yes, think of it as rent. Besides, States, Cities, and so forth receive the same aid. It is one heck of a deal, get Tribes to cede land to the U.S., and then in return receive benefits for it. Desecrate the land and forbid Natives from the exercises of religion. After all, when America defeated Germany it did not go and occupy it. Next thing you understand, the BIA will be Bureau of Iraqi Affairs. Just think, you will have all the gas you want, but alas, you will be required to pay for being in another peoples Country.

I have paid more taxes than the average American citizen, and I don't live on a reservation. The government should pay for the rest of it's existence to the Native tribes. You wouldn't even have to ask this question, if the government had honored it's treaties.

This answer may be compared to each and each of the negativity stated above, no matter if its is authentic or no longer. Our tribe is a rustic already (and extremely some tribes function lower than a similar circumstances.) we've our honest share of casinos which enable us run our own hospitals, faculties, clinics and provide scholarships. we've a tribal courtroom that would cope with any crime yet homicide. We situation our own motorized vehicle license plates and searching licenses. we've a useful herd of 5 thousand American Bison and performance horse racing tracks, vacationer hotels, tobacco shops, bingo parlors and large provider stations stated as holiday plazas and are this latest day beginning a settlement with the Seminoles in Florida to operate structure organizations to erect new Indian casinos and purchase all our meat and different ingredients imparting our eating places from each and each somewhat than from outdoors sources.

I realize this is a very sensitive issue and I've thought twice about even answering it, but then again I do believe you should at least know my experience.

I am 23 years old, native american and receiving aid from Revenue Sharing to attend college, where I am majoring in Computer Science.

Revenue Sharing (as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong) is different from actual gov't aid, as it is from a fund pooled from the casino contributions of other tribes, as mandated by the government; however, I believe the basis of what I have to say still applies the same.

When I incur fees like tuition or for school supplies, I pay for it with my own money which I work for like anyone else, but then I send the receipt back to my tribe and they reimburse my costs by taking from our "Education Fund".

Also, just because I can do this doesn't mean I have ever been frivilous. I ONLY follow this procedure for school related fees and that is it.

I have seen it said that Indians (tribes or individuals) don't pay taxes. I can't speak for anyone else but I sure as heck know that my family does. Even I have, ever since 1999 when I started working for my tribe as webmaster/data entry. Please don't believe generalizations or what tv tells you.

With my education paid for, I was able to save enough of my own money to buy my first vehicle last year. Up until then I would have to either bum rides from my parents or anyone with a vehicle, catch a bus, ride a bike or walk. I enjoy the expanded personal freedom having a car has afforded me.

Also, there was a time that my family and I were homeless. My parents do not smoke/drink/do drugs or have criminal histories that got us in that situation, times were just hard. I remember us all having to live out of a pickup truck.

However, my dad found work at a lumber mill and my mom worked with my elementary school and returned to college herself and eventually my parents managed to put everything together again.

But with the house provided for us by the tribe (Which I should stress is not "free". My parents pay out of their own pockets all mortgage, taxes, utilities, maintenance and other fees.) at least we no longer have to worry about being homeless. Well .. even though I live on my own now ( I also pay all fees for the place I am renting through a private owner.) I know at least that if things got too hard for me, I could always have a home to go back to.

I guess what I am trying to say about it is that I believe it could be a good thing if there is no chance of embezzlement, corruption, etc. If everything is strictly organized and funds are used only for what they are intended for.

I should also mention we are a non-gaming and landless tribe. Personally, I don't care much for casinos, but I am appreciative of the help I have been able to recieve through them from the other tribes.

Education is the greatest power that money can buy for you and the best way for native americans to gain control of their own lives.

Well...if you imagine that it's your own grandma trying to survive in the "middle of nowhere" in the middle of winter in a little shack with no insulation and all her kerosene to help keep her warm is just about gone, and her food supply isn't far behind with several feet of snow and no cash for food right now let alone a way to even go get it... yeah, maybe they should, and do a bit more.

I agree with Undone and believe that yes they should receive aid from the government. I don't necessarily believe that the aid should be given freely. I believe they should have access to the aid but need to earn it.

Absolutely, its so disgraceful the way they have been treated.
Is there no compensation for native groups who were systematically destroyed over generations?
It is an outrage!!!

If the treaty says that members of that tribe get food or health care, then we honor our treaty.

If not, then it is the same as other citizens, do they qualify?

that's it.
