I posted a question about my Betta not eating but after some research and a flashlight I discovered he's got velvet. I'm preping a small med tank so I can transfer him tomorrow and I have the tank covered as I read it helps. I need advice on the best medicine and where I can get it and the best way to sterilize the infected tank.

Thanks

The most effective treatments contain malachite green and/or formalin (standard ich treatment). Both of the named medications are known carcinogens, so be careful when handling it. It also helps to turn off all lights on the tank - the parasite (Piscinoodinium, formerly Oodinium) contains a photosynthetic pigment.

Should also add to treat at least 14 days, longer if you still see spots.

you want to get primafix , or melifix, (cant remeber wich one is for fungus, but the bottle says what it treats) i think its primafix .. but anyways , to steralize the tank , remove the fish to a safe container , atleast 1 gallon , and treat the fish in there. to steralize the tank itself , use a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in the old water (not with the fish in it ) , remove the decor , and gravel , after pouring the peroxide in there , and letting it sit for about 30 minutes.. rinse everything in the tank twice, then two more times... . refill the tank after wards , and treat with water treatment , let sit over night. then net the fish out of the treated water , and place in the fresh tank , along with a dose of primafix , treat the water as directed for the time period stated on the directions , but keep up with water changes , and things should setle down after a week or so ..
