These are the main sources of power:

Hydroelectric
Coal
Nuclear

These are the wannabes:

Wind turbine
Solar panels
Water wheel
Methane recapture

The reason why you don't hear about them that often is because you pretty much have to be a hippy to know what to do with them. They're costly, inefficient, and mostly have religious followings.

If they were good for business, power companies would be busting each other up trying to build the best system.

They're not.

What do the power companies prefer for cheap production and efficiency? Hydroelectric, coal, nuclear.

That's what lights up our cities.

The others can only light up lake cabins.

Geothermal is the best way to heat and/or cool a building. More incentive should be given to increase the usage of this means of space conditioning.
The cost of installation is the reason you don't hear much about it so far. With the rising cost of fossil fuels etc. you may start hearing more and more about it soon.
