Oh My God!!!
...one of the most distinct memories in my 20-year Naval career!!!
I was going to a mechanic's school, at a naval base in Great Lakes, Michigan; at the time, I had to have permission to go out on the town in civilian clothes. Me and two other buddies planned to go out to a drive-in, but planned to stop at a rest stop, change out of our Naval uniforms, and change into some civilian clothes.
On the way, we picked up some pizza, and stopped at a liquor store, for some beer, some brandy, and some raspberry schnappes. From there, we rode miles through acres of thicketed acres, until we got to the drive-in, which was playing "Poltergiest" and "Clash of the Titans".
During "Clash...", me and my buddies pretty much stuck to the beer; after the film, we all broke to the snack bar, for some additional munchies. Upon returning to the car, my buddies dug into the brandy and raspberry schnappes (I stuck with the beer...wise move!!!).
Upon the start of "Poltergiest", my buddies were so wasted, they got out of the car at the start of the movie, and staggaringly saluted the screen (the film, if you recall, starts with the T.V. station sign-off announcement, followed by the national anthem); once then got into the car, they continued with the brandy and schnappes...until they passed out!!!
At the end of the film, I was concerned about my buddies, as they were still passed out, and unwakable; I had never driven a stick shift car before, let alone driven at all, ands so, still somewhat buzzed from the beer, I pondered the moment, while the main feature, "Clash...", was repeated.
Halfway through "Clash...", my buddies both awoke suddenly, stuck their heads out their car windows, and power-puked; after spilling their guts, they collapsed back into the car, and passed out once again. Least to say, by this point, I was a bit worried about getting back to base.
After the conclusion of "Clash..", and virtually all the cars in the theatre had left, the attendents began scouring the theatre with their flashlights; as their lights got closer to our car, I (definately sober, by now), got my unconscious buddies into the back seat of the car. I took the driver's seat, started the car, and with constant jerk and pulls with the clutch, I got the car moving, and out of the theatre.
By the time I got the car down the road, out of the woods, and onto the main highway, I had gotten pretty damn good with the stick shift, and the clutch; the security guard had no idea what was going on, as I pulled up to the front gate of the Naval Base, and waved the car in.
As I parked the car, and helped my buddies out of the car, I breathed a definate sigh of relief.....
.....and this is how I learned to drive a stick shift!!!

Four years ago, before the neighboring county's Drive in shut down. It was the closing night of the drive in and they did a double feature with 'The Shining' and 'Cape Fear'. had a great time, there is nothing like a good thriller at a drive in!! Oh and I remember all the concession stand goodies were free!!
