It's a song about everyone living in peace.

I believe John Lennon was trying to say that we should all just "be". No Heaven, No Hell, No War, No Possessions to fight over, No countries, no political agendas. I don't think this song was "sugar-coated". I think it qualifies as an anti-political statement. Those who listened and heard what he was saying, grew and became wiser for it. John (while not the god that some made him to be) was an intelligent, enlightened man who wanted to pass some of that shine on to the masses.
Can you imagine?

In the book Lennon in America, written by Geoffrey Giuliano, Lennon commented that the song was "an anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti-capitalistic song, but because it's sugar-coated, it's accepted."

The lyrics were thought to be inspired by Lennon's hopes for a more peaceful world, though their origins are not known for certain.

Imagine if this world didn't have all the barriers and beliefs that keep us from attaining world peace. For instance, if there was no religion, there would be no wars over religion.

Not that I agree with the song, but what I get out of it, is that without people's beliefs bringing them to violence, people would live each and every day together in harmony.

It's asking the listeners to imagine a simple, peaceful life, without concerns about heaven, hell, posessions, religion, boundries, or borders.

It's an idyllic vision of peaceful anarchy, in which people all cooperate and share for the good of everyone. Kind of like communism.

It's very obvious what it means. Just sit down and listen to it. Then imagine just what he's singing about.
