I got this spam letter and it said:

Isn't that illegal since your copying it and when copying it you are technically stealing.

It claims you are just "backing up your movies" but couldn't you also use it to sell them? Either way, just copying is illegal right?

OK. This is my opinion on this. Some of you might disagree, but I think if you buy it you should be able to make copies for your own use. But you should not be allowed to make copies to sell them or just to give to your friends either.

That software itself is not illegal. It only become illegal when you use it to make pirated or illegal copies. There is nothing stopping you from doing something like that, the program only makes it possible. You will only find legal problems when you give or sell one of those copies to someone else.

It is illegal to sell or give out dvd copies, but it is not illegal to back up your own collection of DVD's.
