I know this from experience---
She will just continue to hate you if you keep mum, and try to be nice to her.. The best thing you can do is confront her about the way you feel. Let her know that you feel as if she hates you, ask her what you have done to offend her? Get her to talk-ask her to lunch. Be persistent.

She will either accept you and respect you, or continue to hate you, and respect you.. Either way getting that respect early on is key. She will appreciate your directness, and you can kill this whole drama, while it's young.

you have to consider her position. you see, she sees you as a threat. you're going to take her little boy away from her. all you have to do is stay polite, make polite conversation when you see her, be civil, and don't engage in any kind of bickering with her. it won't hurt to spend time with your boyfriend AND the family, either. if you show her that you're not oging to take him away from her, she will be much more receptive to you. you also just need to show her that you're good for him, since much of the time she will assume at first that you're not good enough.

The one problem that most women have in marriages is their mother in law. It is just the way it is. But if you want to marry this guy or have a serious relationship with him, you get him AND all of his family, including his mother. If she is that bad, dump him!
