I think this saying is only partly true. There are many things in life over which we have no control, no matter what the existentialists say. Time and chance befall everyone (Ecclesiastes 9:11).

Life is a mystery we take for granted.
A few people seem to have learned, early on, that they attract certain kinds of things into their lives. In response, they keep an 'internal check' on what they do.
People who are kind, considerate, really care, often attract a similar quality into their lives. They marry, wisely, love their family, find a fulfilling career...look forward to the changes and rewards of living a mentally healthy life.
If you can do this, you will be a rare individual. Out of the 7 billion people on this earth, not many have managed this.

It means you can't always choose your circumstances but you can always choose your attitude toward those circumstances. Right now it sounds as though you have a very limited, deterministic attitude toward life. That is the part you can change. Open up a little, take some risks, and watch your life bloom. Even wrong choices can result in good life lessons.

Those are only the stages of life, the real life is what happens in between all that stuff, it's the friendships you make, it's the love you find and the sense of accomplishment , watching your kids be born and playing ball with your grandchildren, that's the good stuff.

You're right on the money, that's bs. Life is life, not what you make of it.
Now, what is life? Well, you already started asking, keep looking and you'll find. It's up to you to find out about it or not, either way is ok.
Good luck!

There is a progression to life as you stated. However the way you go through those stages is up to you. You can be adventurous, cautious, happy, sad, serious, or happy-go-lucky.
It's the way you go through those stages that you control your life. Some go through all those stage depressed and sad. Some do great things of noteworthy value. That's the part you control.
We all get one life.......how you live it and approach the stages determines what kind of life you have.

Your life is what you choose it to be. You life is based on your perceptions, your views and your choices. Yes, all those things you mentioned we end up doing, but don't you want your experiences of them to be phenomenal? If you just let things happen to you, you are giving other things and people control over your life. Why not shape your life they way you want it to be.
Choose to have fun, choose joy, choose prosperity, choose peace. Find the good in things even in bad experiences. It is those bad incidents that shape us to be great human beings. Choose good perceptions, choose to enjoy life and make good choices. Your life is what you make of it, so choose to make it awesome.
