economic meltdown isn't the only thing, though I do believe it would solidify the masses and perhaps put an end to our aristocratic democracy.
Other possible scenarios include foriegn invasion, environmental disaster (along the lines of food shortages or plague), or banking collapse (not the same as an economic meltdown, this would be a failed bailout by the FDIC that causes many investors to lose money without recourse).
Basically, until its uncomfortable or impossible to continue on our current path, there won't be any real change made. It will take extreme inconvenience or even desperation to make a serious change in our complacency...

I kind of feel the same way. Our country has been hijacked by the rich, and the poor (especially with the GOP in power) are falling further and further out of the loop.
You can only take advantage of the peasants for so long before something boils over.
I think as more jobs are outsourced, the price of gas outpaces inflation, the downward social spiral continues, the value of a public education continues to decline, and entertainers continue to make so much more than the important tasks such as police, fire, and teachers, things will get to the point you are talking about sooner than later. Perhaps in our lifetime.
The constitution may not need revamping, but those in power need to be thrown out, politicians should never be rich, there shouldn't be lobbyists at all, and ordinary folk need more say in what happens...which means this one party rule that pervades most states needs to go.

As the middle class continues to evaporate, and the gap between the "elitist's", and the poor widens, your hypothesis has merit. The problem, as realized by sixties extremist's like the Weathermen, and Black Panthers, is organization of the masses. Without wide spread support, and devoted involvement, the movement is doomed to failure!

Yeah that worked great during the depression. The rich stay rich and the poor and middle class suffer. Demand the govt for campaign reform and term limits. Alot better than watching your family starve.

At the current status of the US it is probably the only thing that will save us. As long as the GOP is in office it will get closer and closer by the day. Said thing to have to admit to

Very communistic of you. We have more wealthy people in the United States than any other country in the world. You think it would so great if we were all poor, except for those in the government. They get their money via taking your money. You hate free enterpise where people choose the products they buy which can make other's rich.

I have a better idea. Sell your computer and give me the money. I'll pay off the remainder of my debt and be on my merry way.
