NCAA rules prohibit any professional athlete from competing in the NCAA. Therefore, by virtue of the fact that any player is an NBA player, they've been paid to play basketball, which bars them forever from playing on an NCAA team, even if they subsequently go to school.
So even if Lebron James decides to wise up and go to college, he can't play hoops for his school.

Should you become an NBA player? Well if you have a passion for basketball and consider yourself above average, go for it! You may be selected by a team in the NBA Draft. You'll have no option to pick which team to be on, but you can request a trade to the Orlando Magic if you feel you must play for the Magic. There's no age limit, as long as your older than 18 you can play in the NBA!

NCAA rules require athletes to be "amateurs" in the sport in which they are competing. Signing a contract with any professional (or semi-professional) team in their sport makes them ineligible. So a player who competed for the NBA, the ABA, or a foreign league would not be allowed to compete in NCAA basketball. In some circumstances, they could compete in other sports (e.g. professional sprinters playing college football), but there is always a problem with endorsement deals, etc., from the professional sport.

Like the other people above me mentioned, it is against NCAA policy. NCAA sports are considered at the amatuer level. Leagues like the NBA are considered professional.

I'm pretty sure that a professional cannot play on a college team. We would have colleges recruiting them just to win tournaments.
