Two reason ...
First, because it is a story that speaks of love and trying to find the perfect marriage. Logan is stable but boring; Joe is exciting but controlling; Tea Cake is the bad boy women love but he isn't very reliable. It's about the search for love and the perfect marriage, and it doesn't matter when this story was written, the same basic ideas will hold today as they did then.
Secondly, it is an excellently written African-America novel, even though it wasn't written FOR or directed toward only African-Americans. It speaks of culture and traditions and it uses excellent language to do it.

I don't know, it might just be making a comeback. I personally didn't enjoy it too much.
