I would read an old book about everyday philosophy of our lives. I would want to connect with the author in our view of our past. I would want to know that there is someone out there that thinks like I do and that they ponder the same things as I do.

One thing I don't want to read in fiction, is about people suffering. Especially for no reason. My mother-in-law always gives me books where everyones life falls apart and nothing ever gets better. The book doesn't have to have a positive ending, but misery for the sake of misery doesn't appeal to me.

My favorie topic is Japanese Mythology. I mean, when you get to the part about the hundred-year-old lantern spirit wth one big eye and its tongue hanging out, what's not to like about it? It's hilarious!

I also think the idea of five mystical beasts which guard the five directions (North, South, East, West, and Center) is very intriguing. For the record, the guardian of the North is Genbu, the black tortoise and snake who are constantly fighting, the guardian of the South is Suzaku, the crimson pheasant, the guardian of the East is Seiryuu, the blue, green, or black oriental dragon, and the guardian of the West is Byakko, the majestic white tiger. Also, the guardian of Center is the golden Kirin, whose likeness is the logo of a brand of beer (I'm not making that up!). Each has their own season, emotion, element, planet, sense, trigram, etc. associated with them as well.

When a book's title implies that its true calling is to be read in my bathroom, then I am hooked. For example the 4-ply Bathroom Reader or Useless Trivia for the Bathroom or Short Tales for the Comode.

At the moment, I would really appreciate a book written about the logistics of hiking the Great Wall of China.
