There was a civil war that lasted three years. Franco had much of the official army by his side. The democrats (opposers of Franco) had a more disorganized army. They were expecting help from democratic countries in Europe that never came (some people like George Orwell went to fight by their own initiative but the governments did not help). On the contrary, Franco had help from Mussolini and Hitler. At some point Stalin helped the democrats but he also created an internal division by helping only communists and prosecuting the others.
George Orwell's book Homage to Catalonia is a short and very interesting book where he tells his own story of what he saw in Spain and explains a little of the politics.
