I recently learned how to play the electric guitar, and my favorite bands are Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Anthrax...
and I want to buy a guitar that has that kind of sound, since I don't know much about guitars yet, do you have any reccomendations?

By, the way I'm in a $500 - $800 budget for my graduation gift. but maybe in the near future I'll get one of those really expensive Gibsons, like that Les Paul, I don't know.

You can find a really decent Ibanez or Jackson in that price range.

You are probably looking for something with a Floyd Rose tremolo.

Since that locking tremolo has fine tuners and a whammy bar, its almost impossible to knock it out of tune while shredding.

Also...you need to consider a decent amp with the tone you are looking for.

I highly suggest going through either a line 6 spider III, a marshall or a mesa boogie.

Granted, the amp might take you out of the 500-800 price range, but the guitar itself won't.

Best of Luck

I'm with the guy who said you need an amp--the amp and the effects will do more for you than the guitar itself. Any decent solid body with humbuckers and a whammy bar, properly set up, should do the trick. But you will get no sound beyond what the amp and speaker can handle.

One way to keep within your budget is to get a person who really knows guitars to accompany you to a pawn shop.

Another is to shop online; I'm partial to Musician's Friend for guitars, or perhaps Music Zoo, but there are plenty of dealers you could go for.

But start out by going to Sam Ash or the Guitar Center or whoever's big in your city, and take several sessions to fool around with what they've got so you can see which brands and models of guitars feel right to your fingers, which amp croons to your liking, etc. Maybe try out a seven-string to see if you like that heavy dark sound.

If you do buy a new set-up, HOLD OUT FOR SALES!

True, the guitar itself has a lot to do with the sound, but the amp, effects and YOU have an even bigger part in the sound produced. If you're gonna shoot for the $800-range, you can pick-up an LTD Jeff Hanneman Signature guitar for $489, a Marshall MG30DFX for $230, and a Digi-Tech Death Metal distortion pedal for $50... all from Musician's Friend. Just remember that you can have all the gadgets and gizmos ever built, but the true tone comes from you.

Ibanez is makes a great guitar, and you might want to learn more about different pick up sets to find out what kind of sound you want, the one that you can cross out though is a fender telecaster, used for blues, but i would go to ibanez, joe satriani plays one, and korn is sponsered by them not my favorite band but they have that kinda sound to it.

if you don't like it then don't bother forcing yourself, when ever I see a video of a crowd of people rocking out to some piece of crap band, it doesn't make me think that the band isn't crap, it makes me think that the crowd of people like crap music. Not that I'm saying Metallica etc are crap though, I dig thrash metal, but music is personal, I don't expect everyone to like what I like.
