I heard that on the old Super Mario (64?) or one of them, there was a secret under water world thing, and if you found a certain block, and hit it, it would freeze the game up, and you got the game out, and sent it to Nintendo and you would win a million dollars. Anyone else know about this, or if it was ever true? Wonder if you done it now if they'd still give it to you?

I don't remember where I heard it at... but it was a long time ago. I never knew if it was actually true or not. Kinda didn't make sense to me either, but I dunno. I may e-mail someone at Nintendo, and see what I can find out.

In the old supermario games there where a lot of tricks and glitches. There where many ways to achieve infinite life and go to never ending worlds. I don't know wether there was a particular block that when hit would freeze your game but, it is deffinetly not out of the question. Games are just programming code and optical illusions. It is possible that a particualr code that runs on a particular map and is activated in a particular way would cause a game to chrash. As a matter of fact not just games but other hardwares too. Have you ever heard of the dreaded blue screen of death in windows? So, again, this part of the story may or may not be completely true but it is definetly possible.
The other half of the tale is probably very very false. Games, like most softwares always have bugs and glitches. There are games that have been known to trigger some effect that will force you to have to restart the game from the begining. I mean saved games not just a simple beat it in an hour type of games. Glitches and bugs are extremly common. The reason they are left there are for various reasons. One is that some bugs are extremely hard to find or to trigger. When people test an equipment whether it is hardware or software, they usually test the most common scenarios that they can think of. However, there is always one person that will do something unexpected and discover something. It is very hard to debug these problems because you simply never ran accross it. Another reason for bugs is that there are time contraints in development. A lot of times games have the luxury of being good enough. Especially PC games since you can always release a patch to fix a known problem. Remember that all projects have due dates and the longer it runs over that due date the company looses money. Games are a bussiness and like every bussiness they are there to make money. So, letting a few bugs go by is considered somewhat ok. Remember that we are talking about games, not the control system of an airplane. As long as the glitch does not too many people unhappy they will let it go. This reason leads me to belive that Nintendo would not pay anybody 1,000,000 yens for finding some dumb bug. Is ridiculous. Why would day? They would just address a person concerns with some dumb excuse, like "We are sorry that your gaming experince was not ... blah blah.... we appreciate our customes Nintendo" . So, no, no company in their right mind would give away 1,000,000 to find a bug in their code.

It sounds like you are talking about the original super mario bros, for NES and famicon.
You could pass through a brick and go to the minus world. In the NES version there was only one level in the minus world. When the famicon version was released later they added two more levels..
There was nothing about winning a million dollars for getting there though.
