i own a repair shop and believe me there's a lot of difference in them the more a gun usually cost the better it usually is ,it all comes down to laying the paint down with as smooth of a finish as you can get, that's what its all about in the end,so some of the cheaper guns aren't good for this, but even with a good gun if you don't know how to set the spray pattern on it or how much air pressure to run or even how close to be to the surface of it,a good gun wont help you,but the best guns will make it easier, but you still have to know how to use them,or they wont even help, good luck with it hope this helps.

No not all spray guns are the same!!! From personal use, i wouldn't buy those electric guns! They clog, are loud as hell!, and are just worthless!
I would go with an air spray gun, that is run by a compressor.
Dont buy a syphon feed gun, with the cup at the bottom. For one, there is a great amout of bounce that is given off by that type of gun. When i say bounce, its the paint that doesnt stick to your project. So you in turn have to use a greater amount of material to paint an area that would use less paint in a different gun.
I would go with a gravity feed gun( cup at the top) It requires less air because gravity supplies your paint, unlike that syphon that needs a higher amount of air to get the paint to move up and through the tube.
But if you want the best gun in my opinion is a HVLP(High Volume Low Pressure) Gravity Feed Gun. For one, It has alot less bounce than traditional guns like those syphon feed types. It requires a lot less material, because of the lower pressure. The atomization is way better. And air guns are just cool, and so much quieter than those electric types. oh yeah i forgot their enviromentally safer!
(can i have a star now?) lol

Its all in pattern and atomization. You can buy a basic HVLP spray gun for $100, it will do a basic job. You can spend $480 on a Sata and have it lay down a car show job. All depends on what you are painting, how much painting, etc.
But like any tool, the better tool is always better.

well if you are priming then a gravity gun will work wonders but if you want to do the base coat a good quality spray gun that works with compressed air is the best choice
