It is probably nothing. If it hurts in the upper right hand side, under the ribs, you should tell your doctor immediately especially if your blood pressure has increased or you begin retaining water or your vision becomes blurry. This could be a sign of a severe form of preeclampsia (toxemia) knows as HELLP Syndrome that affects the liver. Most likely it is just growing pains though. It is always better safe than sorry so don't be afraid to call and ask. Good luck!

Then again it could be any of these:

growing pains from ligaments stretching - just give it time, it will pass and maybe take a Tylenol
gas - take Gas X
contractions - if it is sporadic and your stomach feels hard when it hurts. Call the doctor as 5 months is too early.
baby's foot in the wrong spot - This is more common later on but it could happen, he'll move eventually
dehydration - drink 3 cups water
side stitches (like getting out of breath while exercising) - take deep breaths
hunger - eat a high protein snack

The baby is probably having a good time hooking his little toes up under your ribs when he is in a position where he can reach them.

i would get use to it, because your little person is having a good ole time kicking you there and wont stop untill hes out. when its happening just arch your beck to relieve some of the pressure.

I am going to guess it is the baby that is kicking you. I had that once or twice and I decided it was the baby!!!
