Regarding earnings and overall lifetime success, I know the statistics, but is it over-rated? Is it a "status" issue? There are plenty of individuals I know of, that do not posses college degrees, yet are highly professional, work hard, have excellent work ethics, not to mention make good solid money w/benefits w/o working 1,000 hrs per week.
Are people w/o degrees unable to get ahead? Are they failures? If it's possible to make great $$ w/o the debt, why would you want the debt?

There is no doubt that many individuals have gotten ahead minus the degree. However, it is much easier and minus the degree, you will find yourself trapped in your original company--too hard to move. Thus you will make less money for the level than you would if you could easily move. I know because I was there.

I currently don't go to college but I think it's not over-rated; it really depends though.
I work at this one job where if you stay in that position for 8 years or so then you can make over $70k a year w/ overtime. Bad thing is that you'll be stuck there and if you somehow get removed from the company for whatever reason then it'll be hard to find another job just like it.

While with a college degree you can move around more.

Just making a point about having a degree. I know that you can be very successful w/o one.

There are not many well paying jobs out there if you do not have a college degree in your hand. Years ago you could get away without one. Most places will not even interview you without a degree.

Right or wrong does not matter. That is the way it is. It is sad to see people that have worked in corporations for years and have never been promoted. Someone comes in years younger with a degree and starts out above that person and makes twice the money. Happens all the time.......Moral to story? Yeah, you're right. Get that degree. It is not a "status issue", it is a "success issue".

In my country if you want anything above a menial or low-paying job (aside from construction which is now BUST) a college degree is pretty much a must, (then again College is also free so the majority of people go except for an underclass who have inter-generational dependence on welfare). As for college itself, I envisioned never ending parties, drinking, staying up until dawn and boys boys boys! I do 36 hours a week take sixty credits, have classes from 8am-6pm, spend over 20 hours a week on mandatory work and assignments (outside of class time). I have hardly anytime to eat or sleep let alone have any fun =( it's like a harder more depressing version of high-school, but then again I picked Biochemistry as my degree, my friends doing arts degrees seem to have a much better time of it

Degrees are NOT over rated...by employers.
Degrees ARE over rated by some a.holes who get them..."Call me Dr."...

You are correct in stating that there are very successful people without degrees. Most of them are business owners. However, if you want to be part of a corporation, there is usually very little chance of being successful without at least a bachelor degree. Sorry, but it's true.

To get your first job out of school, they look at your degree, where you got it from, what was your GPA, etc.

Future jobs are more "What have you done, and what can you do for us". The degree is assumed.

Good luck!

College is the entrance ticket for entry to the good life.
It is possible to get there without this ticket, but very difficult.

If you were the Human resources person at a large company, and two applicants came in to apply for a good job. Who would get the edge? the college grad or the High School Grad.?

Only under very special circumstances would the High school grad get the job.

No, you don't need to go to college to make good money. My father never went to college and he started his own business and made more than $60,000 back in the 80's and 90's (he's retired now). I did go to college and I'm happy I did. I'm a teacher now so no I don't make great money but I went to college for two different reasons. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it and I wanted to get a job that I really love. If you can find a job you love that makes you decent money then forgoe college. It's not for everyone, don't beat yourself up over it.

Yes, it is highly overrated. In fact, if you really want to make money, the FASTEST way to do it is to go into restaurant management. If you stay with a single restaurant chain for 10 years, by the end of year ten you are almost guaranteed to make over $100,000 a year. This was published by Forbes about 3 years ago.

This is an individual choice. College is not meant for everyone. However, I don't think it is overrated. It is an example of an individual's desire for further learning, plus his/her desire to obtain training in a particular field that he/she wants to master.

Unfortunately, I think it is a "status issue". For the most part, college grads do make more money. That doesn't mean others don't work hard.
