I was 10 days late this month on rent and the next thing I know, I get a call from my parents at 7:45am ON A WEEKEND from my mom. She and my step dad were FREAKING OUT because she said that my landlord told them that I was FIVE MONTHS BEHIND ON RENT!!! I have receipts to PROVE this isn't REMOTELY true and as soon as my mom got on the phone with the owner of the building, he confirmed that the landlord LIED!

Since my name is the only one on the lease and my parents are just emergency contacts, can I sue my landlord for something like invasion of privacy or harrassment? Can I sue at all? I'm just livid!

Technically you can sue your landlord for defamation of character. But, the suit will fail. You informed your parents that the landlord was lying and you have proof to show them. If he told an employer or published this in a newspaper or other wise made it public knowledge then you would have a case. But, as the case stands you haven't actually been harmed and so have no grounds to file a lawsuit.

I would suggest having a sit down with your landlord, after you have cooled down, and ask them why he told made such a big mistake and told your parents. I would then ask him who else he told this mistake to. I would strongly suggest that you avoid the word lie.

The problem is with your future rent, your repairs, your parking and other things. If you make the landlord angry then next time you lease comes up he will stick you with a big increase. If you become a problem tenant in the eyes of your landlord then he might be slow on maintenance calls or be looking for a way to other wise bring you grief. If you don't want to move to a new place then it is best to be diplomatic about it.

If your lease is due to end soon, and you want to move out, then by all means yell at your landlord, tell him that you are furious about this and that is why you are leaving his place. But, until you are ready to leave I would keep a civil tongue.

You are right to be mad about this, but you don't have a lot that you can do about it.

You could only sue if his lie caused you quantifiable damage. If you were fired from your job or he stole from you then you would have some recourse. All he did here was exploit your information, which you willfully turned over as a part of the lease agreement. You are right to be upset, but if you paid your rent on time none of this would have happened.

I don't think you can sue, but you can file a complaint with he owner. Explain to him under no certain terms are any of them to contact your parents for any reason. If you can't get some justification for with this then its time to move. Good luck. I hope this helped you.

If your parents are respectable citizens that could testify in your behalf, you could probably get him for defamation of character and slander.
