The Cold War started after World War II. Russia and the UK and USA had been allies in that war. There were tensions developing during the war, but at conferences at Yalta and Potsdam Europe was divided into spheres of influence between Russia and the western allies. Stalin pretty much played Roosevelt and Churchill for suckers here. He was looking at a world beyond the immediate war.

The Russian sphere of influence formed into the Warsaw Pact - a military alliance and the western allies formed NATO (although de Gaulle kept France out of NATO). Russia and the west confronted each other. There was no actual fighting among the major powers, but they each financed different sides in a series of wars such as Vietnam and a lot of the African civil wars.

It all seems childish and stupid in retrospect.

The Russian Revolution led by V. Lenin. He got help from Germans and toppled the czar that was in power. After the cold war the soviet union was dissolved.
