Krypton was discovered and is on the periodic table. Kryptonite is not an element and it does not even exist in nature.

Krypton is a element in real life. But in Superman Kryptonite is a mineral, and in the movie its scientific name was sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide, and a mineral with the same composition has just been discovered.
the real krypton was discovered in 1898. There are very slight amounts of it in Earth's atmosphere (one out of every million particles)

i just heard howard stern talking about this today.He says it was a recent discovery.Robin's news is usually on point.
