If you really want good crab, forget Pier 39 or anything in the Fisherman's Wharf tourist areas. They just production-cook in such large quantities that they don't pay much attention to quality and freshness. Get in a taxi and go to the Swan Oyster Depot on Polk Street between Sacramento and California. The lines will be out the door because the place is tiny and the prices are unbelievably reasonable for what you get, but it's worth it - this is REAL crab and real San Francisco, not a tourist trap. The same family has been operating this place for almost a hundred years now.

I agree with fogjazz, Pier 39 is not the place to eat if you are a real gourmet. Pier 39 is OK, but not gourmet...anywhere.

The oyster bar in SF is renowned for its great food and for its greater waiting lines. I'd go to the East Bay, Scott's on Jack London Square in Oakland is excellent if a bit pricey.

aliotos is great but anywhere right there at the pier is good. i like to get it from the sidewalk guys and take it down to the beach area with a loaf of sourdough and eat it right there.
