No, I don't think he deserved what he got. Yes, he's supposed to be a sex offender and all but I always feel for him at the end. Nurse Ratched was cruel in a more annoying way than Kathy Bates in Misery but she basically caused Billy to commit suicide...

He did deserve and he wrongly chose the institution as a way to get out of prison. In the long run, prison would probably have been a better choice. I think the circumstances leading up to his death are sad. Like the movie "Frances", a seemingly normal person chances into a lifeless creature and McMurphy parishes in the end.

McMurphy didn't get what he deserved, the lobotmy is an archaic and needless procedure, instead of hospitalization a nstay in jail would have been better, it was right of the chief to smother him though because a shell of ones self is not even worth noting.

Certainly not! I think Kesey intended the book to point out the horrors that pass as mental health facilities. Passing electric current through the brain for "Therapy" when there is only sparse anecdotal evidence to support it.
In McMurphy's case, using the medical equivelent of an Ice Pick (the real tool used in most early lobotomys) to scramble a part of his brain because he was a nuisance???? If he was insane, treat him, if he wasn't send him to prison. But don't maim because people are an inconvienience to you.

Man, I wish I had an answer to this question because it's one of my favorite movies ! But I never really thought about it before. When I watch it, I always feel bad for him at the end. But now that you frame it as a question to ponder, I'm starting to think that maybe he DID deserve it to some extent. This is one of those where you need a couple of beers and a couple of hours to discuss...

he was a prisoner in a lunatic asylum. and he's a pain in the neck for all the staff. he was the troublemaker, the rebel, the shaker of the system. he deserve it. and it had a good impact in the movie.
