Sometimes - why not? I once bought a poem from a homeless man for 20 bucks (all I had was 20s for my train ride home) and he needed it more than I did - he was a beautiful man and I was happy to make him smile. I just had my mother drive a little further to get me :) I still have that poem and I still smile when I think of the look on hi face.

Generally not because unfortunately, many are pan handling because they are homeless, and they are homeless because they are addicts. So when you give them money they often run and buy booze, etc. It is probably best to offer to buy them a meal someplace.
What's really very sad is a lot of them are Vietnam Vets who never mentally and emotionally recovered after returning from the war, developed drug habits to attempt to squelch the pain and have no resources.

Mostly I do if I can afford it ...................... I can't stand seeing people in painfull and degrading situations like that, I'm not one of these people who thinks that if I ignore it that it goes away!! Instead I'll give what I can, besides it sets a good example for my children and hopefully gives them a reason to strive for happiness and peace by always doing the best they can ....................... Not that this will alway be the solution to life's dramas, just that they need to know that life doesn't always go the way you plan and people need to jus try and be there for each other ................ :0)

No, they are all capable of working just like I do. This same thing happened this evening when my daughter and I were waiting in line at the hamburger joint. I knew as soon as I saw them walk near my car what they were going to say....a guy and his girl....they should be embarrased. I wasn't very nice. Plus they can look very scary. I am not taking any chances when I have my child in the car.

No, but I do donate supplies to a homeless shelter.... they make sure they get things they NEED, as opposed to someone possibly spending the money on something bad for them.... i.e. alcohol

I will give them Soda can(S) to turn in, if they bring them back for the return, I consider that work and they earned it by doing a service.

i try to avoid them because they make me feel uncomfortable and will probably just blow the money on drugs or something which is probably the reason they are homeless in the first place...i did however give money to a guy in DC who had an amazing talent at playing the guitar...i just felt he deserved it for his music

Nope-what would you do if, while pulling out a wallet or purse, one of these people grabbed it and ran? Not worth the risk.

No way. In the situation that I find myself, I'd be better asking them money.
