a cd-rom will not burn dvd's since they are different types of coding .. to burn a dvd , you need a dvd burner (can be bought for around 30 bucks, and a dvd burning program like nero. when you buy a new dvd burner , most come with a dvd burning program , so , one purchase will in most casses give you what you need to burn dvd's . however you cant take a mpeg file burn it to a dvd , and have it run in a t.v. dvd player , you need to convert the movie to dvd format before it will play in a stand alone dvd player. i personally use convertx2dvd to convert movies, and burn them to dvd.. i set it up at night because it takes atleast the time of the movies lenght to convert it to dvd . the cool thing about convertx, is that you set it , and run it , and in the morning you have a dvd that will run in your t.v.'s dvd player...

you would need both a DVD-burner and dvd burning software, cause cd burners can burn regular disks that can store 700MB/80 Mins. DVD's are 4.7 GB, or 4,700 MB. big difference. the drive that can play dvd's is probably the same drive that burns cd's. thats a common combination on drives. you can purchase a dvd burner and i suggest removing the regular cdrom drive and making the cd burner the primary drive, then install the dvd burner as the secondary drive. that's if you actually buy one. btw, unless you just want to make data cd's with the windows XP utility, i suggest you download a cd burning software, like nero express.

You need to have both to burn DVD's. If you have a Dell desktop, then you can find a DVD+RW drive on eBay for $10-$50. (you don't have to search for "DELL DVD Burner" just search for "desktop computer DVD+RW drive" almost any of those should fit your computer. after that, just plug it in (its really easy, just open the box, and put in 2 cables and a few screws) and ur ready to go!
Good Luck!
PS, you can find a DVD Burning program on eBay for less than $10, or some DVD Burners come with the software. you could also get an external USB DVD burner.

No, you need an actual DVD burner.
The Cd burner does not have the correct laser for burning DVD's and the DVD player does not have the capability to write to a DVD.

no, you have to have a dvd burner in order to burn dvd's. having a dvd burning program will not solve your problem, when you try to burn a dvd it will not let you because it will not detect a dvdr/dvdrw. you will have to install one if you really want to burn dvd's.
