I had finished a project in Rome, Italy for a client. The Rome airport was extremly busy and I was flying Delta. My collegaue and I got in the delta line to check in. The line was very long and we were the last two people in line. I notice at the front of the line a ticket agent was speaking to the agent behind the desk. The agent had 7 young white males with her, I imagine there was a confusion about their tickets. Once they fixed the problem, the agent escorted the young men to the end of the line. the agent told me and my colleague that these customers had to go before us. Again we were the last two in line. I told the agent no. The agent became upset and told me that I was not a nice person.I was just tried and felt that she was nuts. Why would she put these young men in front of the last to people in line. A woman next to us who happen to be white told her that we were being treated badly and she was going to report her to corporate. What do you think

I am a black woman and no one was behind me. I also did not understand how getting in front of the last to people in line could have helped these men. We were the only blacks in line. Also, I never think everything is race, however this was odd

You don't mention the race of your colleague.....was he/she black as well or of a different ethnicity?

It could be that they just didn't want to put them at the end of the line....no better, and certainly NOT good customer service....but not race related, esp if your colleague was Caucasian.....

I work in HR and consistently when something happens to someone that they don't like, they automatically make accusations that it is because they are a) female, b) of color c) wrong school d) don't play golf etc. You get m y drift...whatever makes me DIFFERENT is the reason why I am treated differently.

Sometimes they are right. Sometimes they are wrong.

SO the answer to your question is MAYBE.

I don't see anything whatsoever in your description which even hints of racism. Sounds like confusion, incompetence and rudeness - we all experience that frequently.
I note that others have asked what race you are. That has nothing to do with the analysis until you establish first that there was some type of disparate treatment.

I think that the plane probably arrived at the destination at the same time for all of you, and both you and the agent managed to make something out of nothing.

What race are you? That's a key piece of info if anyone is to answer you.

One thing I've learned about airports is they're nearly always a not-so-fun experience and seems like crap is always going wrong somehow.

Also after rereading your question, it could be something as simple as the guys were all traveling together and required certain liberties to allow them to travel together.

Probably not race related. You were probably dumped on because you are female. You think you can compete with 7 young males? Maybe on venus.

It might not be race related it could be something completely different. You did say there were whites behind you. But it was deffintaly unproffesional and should be reported. Race related I think may be a strech.

If you're black, why is your little picture that of a white person?
Why does everything that even borders on annoying - this sounds like typical airport screw-up - have to be blamed on race? And you wonder why we get sick of hearing it. We = black people, too, you know.

Did you get on the plane? Did you make your flight?
If you answered yes to these two questions, then no, I doubt that you incurred racisism. Get some rest, and rethink the event.
